Reflections on Text

I chose the text named "Design for Real Life" written by Eric Meyer and Sara Wachter-Boettcher. When i came across by the information of two authors i was so impressed and eagerly started reading text. On reading firstly i feel it is boring and almost i decided the text will be bored and will not understand anything. But surprisingly the text was so easy to understand and it was not boring. The book was divided in to five chapters and in each chapter the authors discuss each different topics which is not even noticed seriously on digital products.

Before briefing that i just want to appreciate both the authors that they approached the topic very carefully and detailed very easily to understand by the readers. Knowing little details about them such as Eric Meyer the first knowledge about him was who created reset css we use daily in our codes. Then as a normal person he reached to his profession of web developer now through working in different job sectors such as pharmaceutical assistant, working in law firm, working in university sector and other fields. Moreover he is a radio announcer, drummer and even burger flipper too. He Can be considered as a part of new era because he likes and prefers worthful music and enjoys eating food.He wrote many books about css and about web designing.

Saying about Sara Wachter-Boettcher she is a leadership coach, creating bold leaders in design and tech fields. She wrote three books and one was co-authored with Eric Meyer and it has been selected by wired and book related panels. Now they are living in different places with their own life and careers it is so blessed to read a masterpiece by them.Looking on their careers one thing is same is that they are both web designers in from old era, living and practicing with new trends in web.

I have chosen the chapter two as it discuss about biases and importance of making space for real people. Reading those chapter we get the idea that there is no perfect people or real users for digital products. Through this text we reached idea that there is no ideal users. So as a designer when we design any digital product we have to think that it can be used by all users irrelevant of gender, stress and moreover it should be simple, resilient and compassionate to users.

In this text the authors discuss about the gender biases faced by users in digital products such as for signing up in apps or filling up any form they will be asking for whether you are male or female but for people who are in-between this causes tension to them and their identity is questioned there. To this problem Facebook was the first to solve this issue by adding other gender options in signing up section. This made a remarkable turning point in inclusive, resilient design such as after that everyone started to include the option such as 'other' in gender options.

Reading the text i was come across that till now i never thought of inclusive design or to design that should include every people. Now i am aware that designing is a responsibility and that shouldn't hurt anyone using our product. After that old era of noninclusivity in designs nowadays in most of the digital products there is inclusivity for people. Eventhough in some products they are insensitive in these cases and it may make the situations even more worse due to on design. After reading text i am looking forward to create designs that are inclusive, simple, resilient, accessible and compassionate to people and don't make them stressful because of one design. Because we are all humans and we don't know the life of other people and what's their situation so with our design if it makes their situation worse or stressful we can't be considered as good designers or responsible designers.
